Anonymous asked: what's saving francesca?

anabelsbrother:

:

I AM GLAD YOU ASKED MY FRIEND!!!

short answer:
the book that basically saved my life

long answer:
a YA novel by the australian author Melina Marchetta, who also wrote other young adult contemporary and fantasy literature. SF also has a sequel called The Piper’s Son.
But what is Saving Francesca?
It’s the story of a girl named Francesca (shocking I know) Spinelli, a “wog” (so I’m not australian but I’m pretty sure it’s a slur?? But people refer to her as that please call me out if it’s bad!!!), which basically means that she’s coming from an immigrant family and has Italian ancestry, but lives in Sydney.
Frankie is more on the introverted side (or so you might think) and tries to follow the crowd instead of leading it. When she changes schools and goes to St.Sebastian, a former boys school, she has to leave her friends behind and is pretty much stuck with three weird girls from her former school (“an ultra-feminist, a rumored slut, and an impossibly dorky accordion player”). And there’s this guy named Will Trombal who is kind of an ass and also Tom Mackee who is definetly an ass.
But more important than all of this is the fact that her usually energetic, intelligent, kind, passionate mother can’t get out of bed anymore, because she suffers from depression and Frankie is totally lost. All her life her mother told her who she should be, what’s best for her and now Francesca doesn’t understand anything anymore, doesn’t know where to go or who to blame and tries not only to save herself but her entire family.

why to read this book (and the sequel and all the other marchetta’s): melina marchetta’s writing style is incredible. You don’t notice it at first, because it’s kind of simple, but she works with fine irony and feelings, makes you cry and laugh with the same sentence and portrays characters and their relationships with each other so realistically and in detail you might think they’re all main characters.(amazing! female! characters! of! all! ages!)
This book has one of the best friendship groups I’ve ever seen (the inner west gang is the ultimate #squadgoals believe me) but with a lot of humor and without (much) pathos. (also! heterosexual! girls! and! boys! not! falling! in! love! but! still! being! Good Friends™!)
The romance is cute and funny and never steals the focus from the main story being Francesca and her family. I can’t even begin to describe how much I love the relationship between Frankie and her parents. Because it’s not always rainbows and butterflies but so damn realistic!!! Everytime I reread this book (so every few months) there’s something new I notice and it’s brilliant!
Basically you should read this book if you want a light read with heavy themes, amazing characters, realistic relationships and great one-liners.

PS: You should totally check out @anabelsbrother for further information she’s the marchetta queen!!

PPS: I forgot about Jimmy Hailler. Now I’m just like Melina herself.
